2016 Dare to Dream Taoyuan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Carnival

While attending the 2016 Dare to Dream Taoyuan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Carnival - Activities for Makers held at the Chung Yuan Christian University in Zhongli District during the morning of October 1st 2016. Taoyuan has an extensive industrial cluster that currently includes 13 Innovation & Incubation Centers. Plans were made to establish three entrepreneurship centers and an International Start-up Village, giving the youths who dare to dream to build their own enterprises. Mayor Cheng is dedicated to making Taoyuan the best place to work, live, and start new businesses and will make sure that the City becomes the best start-up hub of the entire country.

Mayor Cheng said that a lot of young people did not think about starting their own businesses because they felt that the barrier to entry of the start-up is simply too high. However, a society can only advance by encouraging the spirits of innovation and entrepreneurship. Current programs in youth entrepreneurship include an IP to IPO. The key focus would be innovations, new technologies, and new methods. The Maker spirit and approach were used to highlight the results of creative thinking. Taoyuan City Government organizes entrepreneurship competitions and Maker activities to encourage youth start-ups.

Mayor Cheng also said that Taoyuan offers a great potential in cultivating the Maker Spirit as the Taoyuan city is the national center of production and manufacturing, enjoying decisive advantages with strong foundations in various industrial sectors such as information and communication technology (ICT), logistics network, and electronic part and components. Mayor Cheng said that he once asked the management of Gogoro about the reasons they chose to establish their base in Taoyuan. The answer was that the company was able to acquire various parts and components of the electric scooter from subcontractors located in Taoyuan. This demonstrated the extensive industrial and production clusters provided by the Taoyuan city.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that the 2016 Dare to Dream Taoyuan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Carnival includes four major activities, including: (1) international conference where experts and researchers in creative industries and start-ups as well as successful businessmen were invited to share information and knowledge; (2) innovation competition; (3) identify matching business exhibits and opportunities; and (4) Maker-themed expos. The 2016 Dare to Dream Taoyuan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Carnival - Activities for Makers include 78 stalls, allowing visitors to witness the awesome creativity exhibited by everyone.

Since it was first established in 2015, the Department of Youth Affairs provided work areas and opportunities to young people. Youth start-up hubs have also been planned in Xinming Market in Zhongli as well as Andong Street in Taoyuan District. Taoyuan City Government also planned International Start-up Village in Youshih Industrial Park in Yangmei, which will be furnished with research and development factories that youths can make use of. All these are government programs designed to support youths.

Director-general Chen Chia-Chun of the Department of Youth Affairs expressed that the Taoyuan Maker Community worked together to initiate the Making in Taoyuan theme-based exhibition, inviting Makers throughout the country to share their creative works and fantastic ideas. A total of 78 stalls were provided to showcase various types of Maker ware and tools that include handicrafts, new 3D printers, and laser engravers. Works include tracked electric-powered tracked vehicle, Fun paper artworks and creations, restored second hand furniture from The Carpenter's House, and the independently designed and manufactured JSPB air-powered nerf dart thrower.

Attendants to the event included Taoyuan City Deputy Mayor Wang Ming-Teh and Director-general Chen Chia-Chun of the Department of Youth Affairs.
