Brief showers forecast for northern, eastern Taiwan: CWB

Taipei, Affected by the peripherals of tropical storm Amtil, brief showers are forecast for northern and eastern Taiwan on Saturday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

CWB forecaster Lee Meng-shuan (???) said there will be brief showers or thunderstorms in northern Taiwan and the Yilan area on Saturday due to greater moisture induced by Amtil and another low pressure system in the South China Sea.

Occasional brief showers are forecast for other parts of the country, including offshore Orchid and Green islands, Lee said.

As of 8 a.m., Amtil was located 670 kilometers off eastern Taiwan, moving at a speed of 29 km per hour in a northwesterly direction toward Okinawa. It's expected to make landfall in China's Zhejiang Province Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, temperatures across Taiwan will be lower as a result of cloudier weather, with highs hovering between 31-33 degrees Celsius, CWB data showed.

The low pressure system developing in the South China Sea is expected to move in an easterly direction Saturday and pass through the Bashi Channel later in the day before veering into waters off Taiwan's eastern region.

The system will likely gain momentum and could strengthen into a tropical storm in two days, Lee said, adding that a sea warning could be issued if it approaches Taiwan.
