Taipei, Car sales in Taiwan rose by more than 6 percent from a month earlier in June on the back of vehicle brands' intensive promotion campaigns to boost buying, according to government statistics.
In June, a total of 37,889 cars were sold in Taiwan, up 6.2 percent from a month earlier, with almost all of the car vendors enjoying sales growth that month, the data showed. But compared to a year earlier, the June figure fell 5.5 percent.
In the month, car makers such as Toyota doled out free gifts like vacuum robots to lure customers. Meanwhile, Nissan gave air purifiers to lift its sales growth momentum.
Car vendors said the intensified promotion campaigns were staged to give incentives to customers ahead of Ghost Month, which is expected to lower consumer sentiment for buying big ticket items such as cars.
Ghost Month will kick off on Aug. 11 and run through Sept. 9 this year.
In terms of the first half of this year, car sales rose 2.3 percent from the same period a year earlier to 222,194 units, the data showed.
According to the figures, Hotai Motor Co., the local sales agent for Japan's Toyota Motor Corp., retained the title of largest car vendor in Taiwan in June after selling 10,559 units, up 11.2 percent from a month earlier. Hotai took a 27.90 percent share of the total car sales in Taiwan in June.
Hotai got a boost from strong demand for luxury sport utility vehicles under the brand of Lexus.
China Motor Corp., which markets cars under the Mitsubishi marque, came in second by taking an 11.10 percent share on the sales of 4,216 cars in June, ahead of Honda Taiwan, which took a 9.80 percent share, after selling 3,701 cars.
Yulon Nissan Motor Co., which sells models under the Nissan brand, took fourth place after selling 3,444 cars in June, accounting for 9.10 percent of the total car sales.
In June, imported cars made up 44 percent of the total cars sold in Taiwan. Ranking behind the Japanese car brands, Mercedes Benz took the fifth-largest sales spot as the German firm sold 2,530 units, which gave it a 6.70 percent share.
Mazda came in sixth after selling 2,007 units to grab a 5.30 percent share of the total sales in Taiwan ahead of BMW, which took a 4 percent share on the sales of 1,513 units.
