Chair of European Parliament Taiwan Friendship Group visits Taiwan

Taipei-The chairman of the European Parliament Taiwan Friendship Group, along with eight other legislators from the European Parliament, arrived in Taiwan Sunday for a six-day visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that same day.

Michael Gahler and his delegation, including Greek legislator Emmanouil Fragkos, who is a substitute member of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the People’s Republic of China, are in Taipei to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s foreign affairs, cross Taiwan-Strait relations and economic and trade development, MOFA said in a statement.

Gahler is scheduled to pay courtesy calls on President Tsai Ing-wen (???), Legislative Yuan President Su Jia-chyuan (???) and Deputy Foreign Minister Kelly Hsieh (???), according to MOFA.

The delegation will also visit the Mainland Affairs Commission, the European Economic and Trade Office and the American Institute in Taiwan, as well as some energy industry players.

On Oct. 16, Gahler and the chairmen of Taiwan friendship groups in the parliaments of Germany, France and the United Kingdom launched the Formosa Club, a pro-Taiwan platform in the European Parliament, to enhance European support for Taiwan in the face of Beijing’s growing aggression.

In Sunday’s statement, MOFA thanked Gahler and friends in the European Parliament for their unwavering support of Taiwan, as manifested in resolutions passed in recent years showing concern over cross-strait peace and stability and support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
