London, Lin Hwai-min (???), founder and artistic director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, was named an honorary fellow of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London on Wednesday.
Lin, who was in London with the theatre group for its performance of “Formosa” at Sadler’s Wells Theatre earlier in the day, received the award from Mirella Bartrip, the conservatoire’s director of dance.
In naming Lin as an honorary member of the conservatoire, Bartrip said he was one of the top choreographers in Asia.
In response, Lin said the recognition by one of the world’s leading dance and music schools was great encouragement for him.
Lin, who came from humble beginnings and did not start learning dance until he was 23, is now known as the founding father of modern dance in Taiwan and has done 90 productions with Cloud Gate.
As an honorary fellow of Trinity Laban, he now joins the ranks of Merce Cunningham, William Forsythe, and Akram Kahn, internationally renowned dancers who have helped shaped the world of dance and choreography.
Late last year, Lin announced that he would step down as artistic director of Cloud Gate at the end of 2019 to make room for new talent.
