Daytime highs forecast to reach 37 degrees Thursday

Taipei--The weather around Taiwan on Thursday

will remain hot and mostly sunny, with daytime high temperatures

of 36 degrees Celsius expected for most areas, while Keelung, Taipei

and New Taipei could expect highs of 37 degrees, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast that day.

Brief showers or thunderstorms are likely in central and southern

Taiwan all day Thursday because of the influence of southwesterly

winds, while the weather in northern and eastern Taiwan will be sunny

with occasional showers forecast for mountainous areas in the

afternoon, according to the CWB forecast.

Ultraviolet radiation will remain high, reaching dangerous levels

around noon, the CWB said. It urged people to take precautions if they

must go outdoors and to stay hydrated.

In addition, Taiwan's northern and southeastern coasts (including

Green Island and Orchid Island), as well as the outlying island of

Matsu are likely to experience gusty winds, while Taitung in

southeastern Taiwan should be prepared for possible foehn winds, the

CWB said.

In terms of air quality, it is expected to be good to fair around

Taiwan from Thursday to Saturday, according to the Environmental

Protection Administration's Air Quality Index.
