ELECTIONS 2022/NYCU revokes Lin Geng-ren’s master’s degree over plagiarism

The National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) said on Wednesday it had revoked former Hsinchu City Councilor Lin Geng-ren's (???) master's degree and thesis due to academic misconduct.

A source with knowledge of the matter who asked to remain anonymous said Lin's degree and thesis had been annulled over plagiarism and missing citations.

Lin, who was the Kuomintang's (KMT) Hsinchu mayoral candidate in the Nov. 26 local elections, was accused of plagiarizing his master's theses at the Chung Hua University (CHU) and the NYCU.

In October, CHU said that a review of Lin's thesis had uncovered some flaws, but these were not serious enough to be considered plagiarism.

Following the review, CHU asked Lin to submit a revised thesis.

After the NYCU received a complaint accusing Lin of plagiarism in September, it established a review committee to look into the matter.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the NYCU said Lin would be given time to appeal the committee's determination, adding it would not comment on the case before that period expires.

In a social media post made on Wednesday afternoon, Lin said that he respected the committee's decision, while apologizing to the university, NYCU allumni, and his thesis adviser.
