FDA will apply ‘highest standards’ on GM potatoes review

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will apply the highest standards in verifying the safety of genetically modified potatoes. That was the word from FDA food safety division director Pan Chih-kuan on Thursday.

A US firm has applied to export GM potatoes into Taiwan and the FDA is currently reviewing the application. The move has triggered a backlash from the public and activists against genetically modified food.

On Thursday, figures from these groups along with opposition Kuomintang (KMT) lawmaker Lu Shiow-yan held a press conference to express their opposition to GM potatoes.

Pan said the FDA will make sure it applies the strictest standards when assessing food safety risks from the potatoes and will not compromise for the interests of any outside party.
