Ferry services suspended, bike festival postponed due to storm Bailu

Taipei-Ferry services to outlying Green Island and Lanyu will be suspended from Friday and a bike festival will be postponed as Tropical Storm Bailu is likely to make landfall in Taiwan over the weekend.

The ferry service from eastern Taitung County to Green Island will be suspended from Friday afternoon and the ferries will remain docked on Saturday, ferry booking website EZ boat said Thursday.

Tickets sold for ferry services from Taitung and southern Pingtung County to Lanyu will also not be honored between Friday and Saturday but people with those tickets can travel earlier before the services are suspended, EZ boat said.

Ferry services to the two islands could be resumed as early as Sunday depending on the weather, according to the booking website.

Meanwhile, a bicycle festival scheduled for Saturday around Taitung's Guanshan Township will be postponed until Aug. 31 due to the storm, according to the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area Administration.

Tropical Storm Bailu, located 1,038 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip as of 2 p.m. Thursday and packing maximum sustained winds of 72 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 100.8 kph, was moving in a northwesterly direction at a speed of 22 kph, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

There is a 60 percent-80 percent chance that Bailu will strike Taiwan over the weekend, the CWB said.
