Taipei-Filipino hip hop group Brown 101 is to feature at the Laklakan 1 rap battle event in Taichung on Feb. 17 and Taipei on Feb. 18, with two of their members to compete against FlipTop Battle League rappers from the Philippines at the event, according to the organizer.
The all Filipino Brown 101 formed in January 2017 and is a collective of hip hop musicians in Taiwan consisting of Disc-Jockeys (DJs), rappers and producers from Taipei, Zhongli, Taoyuan, Taichung and Tainan.
The group consists of rappers and DJs from across Taiwan, including Jigsaw, JMT, Ely Romero, Zedrick who is also known as Decoy, Dee Third, Gobas Kalbaryo, Ichiro, Jeckoi, Joey Write, Antipatiko, Oomblast, Diablo/Deeplowmatic, DJ Jhang, DJ MP, DJ EUGZ, DJ Tred, DJ UDE, Dicky Fox, DJ Sheen and Jo Flava.
The group's first event was "The Brown 101 Rap Group In Taiwan Concert" held on Jan. 29, 2017 at Focus Disco Taipei in the capital city which resulted in invitations to perform at venues across Taiwan.
According to a spokesperson of the group, the name Brown 101 is a combination of the skin color of Filipinos and the landmark Taipei 101 which represents the music of Filipinos in Taiwan.
The group gathers on weekends to record music at a recording studio in Zhongli District, Taoyuan and also shoots music videos.
The songs and videos are posted on the group's Facebook page Brown101Music and YouTube channel by their music producer Gobas Kalbaryo.
Other artists to perform at the rap battle event will be Diversity Dance Crew, My Style Crew and singer Leony Paredes.
According to Allan Viray, one of the producers of Laklakan 1, the event mostly comprises performances by Filipino rappers, singers and dancers in Taiwan and coincides with the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday which will be celebrated Feb. 15-20.
Artists and rappers from the Philippines have also been invited to the event to compete against Philippine rappers in Taiwan to boost exposure and allow the rappers to develop their skills, said Viray.
The guest artists from the Philippines include famous FlipTop Battle League rappers, such as Mhot whom was FlipTop Isabuhay 2017 Champion and Aklas who was FlipTop Isabuhay 2013 Champion, said Viray, adding that other rappers will include J-King and Romano who were both semi-finalists at Isabuhay tournaments.
The non-instrumental rap battle will consist of three 90-second rounds with a coin toss deciding which rapper goes first in each battle, according the producer.
The battle line up will be Aklas versus Jigsaw, Decoy versus J-King and Mhot versus Romano.
The FlipTop Battle Leaue is the first and largest professional rap battle conference in the Philippines, founded in 2010.
Viray said one of the inspirations behind the event is the fact that usually such performances can only be watched on YouTube and never take place in Taiwan, so he wanted to produce an event for overseas Filipino workers so they too have a chance to enjoy and to participate.
Some of the profits from the event will be donated to the LITRO Babies Phils Inc - LIver TRansplant Operation, which is a support group for children who need liver transplants in the Philippines, Viray said.
According to Viray, whether the event makes a profit or not, a donation will still be made to the LITRO by creating a special budget with the help of sponsors of the rap battle.
The event will kick off at 1 p.m. on Feb. 17, at the Super Club YYG Taichung which is located at 6F First Square, Li Chuan West Street, Central District, Taichung City.
It will continue on Feb. 18 at Focus Disco Taipei which is located at B1, No. 32 Jinzhou Street, Chungsan District, Taipei City, starting from 2 p.m.
