Taipei, Under the influence of strong southwesterly winds, Dawu in eastern Taitung county experienced this year’s first wave of foehn winds — dry, strong and hot downslope winds — at about noon Monday, with temperatures reaching a high for the year of 36.6 degrees Celsius, the Central Weather Bureau said.
A foehn wind event started at 11:46 a.m. in Dawu, causing the mercury to soar, reaching 36.6 degrees at 12:28 p.m. and prompting the CWB to issue a special foehn wind report.
The CWB attributed the foehn winds to strong southwesterly winds crossing the Central Mountain Range and forecast the temperature would remain around 36 degrees in Dawu for the rest of Monday.
The Council of Agriculture’s Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station reminded farmers in the area to observe temperature control measures for agricultural products amid the hot weather.
