A heavy rain advisory is in effect for parts of southeastern Taiwan. The areas include the east coast counties of Hualien and Taitung, as well as Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County in the south.
The Central Weather Bureau says that the rain is being brought by a weather system propelled by a tropical storm that’s currently located about 860 km off the southernmost tip of Taiwan. Forecasters say that the tropical storm is unlikely to pass through Taiwan.
Meanwhile, meteorologists were warning of rain throughout the northern half of Taiwan as well, but for another reason. Northeasterly seasonal winds were bringing cool temperatures and moist air, particularly to mountainous regions. Forecasters say that the rain will ease once dry air moves in from the north.
We saw some cool temperatures dipping into the high teens in the early hours of Sunday along the northern coast. Highs in northern Taiwan were not expected to climb much higher than 20 degrees Celsius in the northeastern parts of the island.
