Kaohsiung Film Festival announces 20th anniversary offerings

Taipei,  The Kaohsiung Film Festival released the first group of films for it’s 20th anniversary edition on Monday, focusing on horror and thrillers.

Among the four feature films announced is actor-turned-writer/ director Brea Grant’s “12 Hour Shift,” an American black comedy about a junkie nurse involved with black market organ trading, festival organizers said.

Others to be presented during the festival between Oct. 16 and Nov. 1 include Canadian director Andrew Thomas Hunt’s “Spare Parts,” in which a female rock band is kidnapped and the girls forced to fight gladiator-style, British director Abner Pastoll’s “A Good Woman is Hard to Find” and Belgian director Tim Mielants’ feature film debut “Patrick.”

A collection of short films in the same genre was also unveiled in the announcement, including “Regret,” winner of this year’s SXSW Film Festival in the Midnight Shorts category, and animated short “Farce” by Norwegian director Robin Jensen.

Organizers told CNA that the full list of this year’s films will be published on the festival’s website on Sept. 17, while hard copies will be available from Sept. 22.

Under the theme “Voyage,” the festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary by showing several movies filmed in Kaohsiung, such as director Tsai Ming-liang’s (蔡明亮) 2005 work “The Wayward Cloud,” which won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

The festival will also mark its 10th year of holding an international short film competition, in which 87 shorts selected from 2,447 submitted this year will compete in three categories — international, domestic and virtual reality (VR) — for a total purse of over NT$1.3 million (US$44,257), the organizers said.

The event will take place in three locations — MLD Cinema, the Kaohsiung Public Library’s headquarters and the Kaohsiung Film Archive, which has a dedicated facility for showing VR films, according to the organizers.
