Mainland Affairs Council Minister Katherine Chang says that Taiwan’s cross-strait ties and its ties with other countries are equally important.
Chang was responding Wednesday to a new survey by pollster Taiwan Thinktank showing that a quarter of Taiwan’s people feel that Taiwan should pursue closer ties with China. That’s compared with 42% who favor close ties with the US and 13% who favor close ties with Japan. The 25% margin of those who feel cross-strait ties should be a greater priority is notably higher than on previous Taiwan Thinktank polls.
Chang said that the United States is a long-standing ally, and that Taiwan should work to strengthen its US ties. But she said that this does not mean Taiwan will ignore China. Chang said that relations with both China and other countries must be given equal weight.
