Mercury drops as cold air mass moves into Taiwan

Taipei-A cold air mass from mainland China was moving toward Taiwan on Friday, bringing lower temperatures, and was expected to blanket the island until Jan. 17, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday.

Shortly after it leaves, however, another cold front will move in, said Cheng Ming-dean (???), head of the CWB's Weather Forecast Center.

After sunset on Friday, the temperature is expected to drop to 13 degrees Celsius in open areas in northern Taiwan, the CWB said.

In the northern half of the country, daytime highs will only reach 16 or 17 degrees around noon Friday, with 23-25 degrees expected in central, southern Taiwan and the eastern counties of Hualien and Taitung.

By late Friday and early Saturday, the lows will drop to 14-15 degrees in northern and northeastern Taiwan and 17-19 degrees in the rest of Taiwan, the bureau said.
