Taipei-Taiwan’s Nantou County and Tainan City have made the list of Asia’s top 10 trending destinations for 2018, which was published Tuesday by the American travel planning and booking website TripAdvisor.
Nantou, fifth on the Destinations on the Rise list, was described as the only landlocked county in Taiwan and home to Taiwan’s highest peak Yushan, mountainous ranges, lush forests and scenic lakes, including the famous Sun Moon Lake.
In addition to its natural scenery, Nantou offers travelers the opportunity to learn more about local culture by visiting its temples, cultural villages and agricultural farms, TripAdvisor said.
Tainan, in seventh place, was touted as the oldest city in Taiwan with a 200-year history as the capital.
“Now a modern city of commerce and trade, history and culture, it is also a religious center, with more than 1,000 temples including Taiwan’s first Confucian temple,” TripAdvisor said.
It said Tainan is also known as the food capital of Taiwan, boasting delectable local dishes and famous street food.
This year, TripAdvisor’s travelers’ choice awards for Destinations on the Rise recognized 44 places around the world.
The list was topped by Ishigaki, an island in Japan’s Okinawa region, based on feedback and reviews by TripAdvisor users.
Other destinations listed in the top 10 for Asia were Japan’s Takayama, South Korea’s Bushan, Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, China’s Shenzhen, South Korea’s Seogwipo, Sri Lanka’s Negombo, and Nepal’s Pokhara.
The destinations on the list were selected based on TripAdvisor traveler review ratings for accommodations, restaurants and attractions, as well as on search and booking interest.
The Travelers’ Choice Destinations on the Rise also include lists for the United States, Europe, and South America.
