New storm forming, may affect Taiwan Friday: CWB

Taipei–A string of weather systems are gaining momentum in the Pacific and may strengthen over the next few days, with one of them likely to affect Taiwan by Friday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Sunday.

Currently, there are three tropical storms in the Pacific — Noru, Kulap and Roke — but the weather bureau said they are not expected to pass near Taiwan.

However, a depression that has formed near the Philippines may develop into the ninth tropical storm of season over the next few days and start affecting Taiwan by Friday, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, a depression in the South China Sea is also likely to strengthen into a storm, perhaps as soon as Sunday evening, but will pose no threat to Taiwan, the bureau said.
