President Tsai Ing-wen says that the overseas Taiwanese community is the key to Taiwan's diplomatic policy. Tsai was speaking Monday at a gathering attended by members of the Cabinet-level Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC).
Tsai talked about the role that Taiwanese expats could play in bolstering Taiwan's global presence.
The [DPP] government hopes to lead Taiwan out into the world, and so we have launched an all-out effort to push diplomacy. And you are the indispensable key for pushing forward our diplomatic efforts. The Taiwanese community living abroad is better able to link Taiwan to the world," said Tsai.
The president also thanked the overseas Taiwanese community for its concern about Taiwan's well-being. She said the more than NT$80 million (US$2.6 million) donated by Taiwanese expats to victims of this year's 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Tainan is the best example of this concern.
Tsai also called on the overseas Taiwanese community to help the younger generation born abroad gain a better understanding of Taiwan.
