Taipei, The Paraguayan government is set to officially invite President Tsai Ing-wen (???) to attend the South American ally's presidential inauguration in August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.
Vivia Chang (???), deputy head of MOFA's Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs said the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay in Taiwan is scheduled to send the invitation to the ministry on Tuesday evening.
This will invite Tsai to attend President-elect Mario Abdo Benitez's inauguration ceremony to be held on Aug. 15, Chang said.
Tsai has already been invited to attend the inauguration on several occasions. The president-elect's team made an oral invitation and a written invitation from the transition team was sent to MOFA. However, Tuesday's letter is an official invitation from the Paraguayan government, she noted.
Asked whether MOFA will suggest that Tsai should also visit Haiti and other Central American allies should she decide to attend the Paraguayan inauguration, Chang said the ministry will make its recommendations but the final decision will be made by the Presidential Office.
Paraguay is Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in South America among its total 18 allies.
