‘Queen of Tears’ breaks viewership record for tvN dramas

Local cable channel TvN’s popular drama “Queen of Tears” finished Sunday, setting a new viewership record for the network, data showed.

The romantic comedy garnered a remarkable rating of 24.85 percent for its final episode aired Sunday, according to Nielsen Korea on Monday, marking a record high for dramas broadcasted on the network.

The figure broke the previous record of 21.68 percent set by the last episode of “Crash Landing on You,” aired on Feb. 16, 2022.

“Queen of Tears” chronicles the marital crisis and subsequent rekindling of love between Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), heiress to the third-generation conglomerate running Queens Department Store, and her smart lawyer husband, Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun), who comes from a modest upbringing with parents running a small supermarket in a rural village.

As their third year of marriage teeters on the verge of collapse, Hong discovers her fatal illness, and the couple navigates an unforeseen twist of fate, leading them to rediscover their affection for eac
h other.

Penned by Park Ji-eun, acclaimed for her work on mega-hit series like “My Love from the Star” (2013) and “Crash Landing on You,” the romantic series’ distinctive approach to portraying chaebol families and characters grappling with fatal illnesses is considered to have contributed to its popularity.
