Seven hospitals form alliance to attract medical tourists

Taipei, Seven medical institutions in Taiwan have formed an alliance in a bid to seek business opportunities by promoting Taiwan’s medical services in the global market, the government-sponsored trade promotion group Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said Monday.

The seven hospitals and clinics — Universal Eye Center, Dianthus Medical Group, Taipei Beitou Health Promoting Hospital, Purple Sun Clinic, TDI Dental Clinic, Doctors’ Doctor Clinic and Yuanli Clinic — have been working with TAITRA to attract foreign clients.

Citing data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, TAITRA said a total of 305,600 foreign tourists visited Taiwan in 2017 for medical treatment or health checks, which was an indication of the growing global reputation of Taiwan’s medical sector.

Li Yu-chen (???), president of Yuanli Clinic, said the seven partners in the alliance have their own specialties, which include eye care, dental care, rehabilitation and plastic surgery, and the partnership is expected to provide a competitive service.

Walter Yeh (???), president and CEO of TAITRA, said in a statement that the alliance is planning to customize its services for foreign clients, thus creating a niche.

TAITRA will use its resources, including its trade promotion platforms in the global market, to help the medical alliance build an international image, he said.

To this end, TAITRA will hold a global supply chain conference on March. 22 and will invite its foreign partners to meet with members of the alliance to pave the way for foreign clients to visit Taiwan, Yeh said.

In addition, special pavilions to promote Taiwan’s medical services will be included in TAITRA’s five product exhibitions later this year in the countries targeted under the Taiwan government’s New Southbound Policy, Yeh said.

In addition to eying Southeast Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand, TIATRA is also hoping to attract medical tourism from China, he said.
