Taipei, An object believed to be an old naval mine was found on the uninhabited islet of Chutou in Penghu County during a beach cleanup on Friday by civilians, and the military is now dealing with the matter, one of the members of the cleanup team said Sunday.
The members of the private organization, which was commissioned by the Marine National Park Headquarters to clean up the beach, did not touch the rusty oval object for fear it would explode, the civilian surnamed Liu (劉) said.
However, the team took pictures, which were posted on Facebook, Liu said.
Based on the photos, a military officer said, the object looked like an old underwater mine but did not appear to be a standard weapon used by Taiwan armed forces.
A military bomb disposal team has been assigned to deal with the matter, but they have not yet been able to travel to the islet because of rough seas and poor weather conditions, the officer said.
