Taichung International Airport and Chubu Centrair International Airport in Nagoya signed a sister airport agreement in Taichung on Thursday. The Japanese airport becomes Taichung’s first sister airport in Asia.
Taichung mayor Lin Chia-lung said he hopes that the agreement will bring another form of international exchange between the two sides. Lin said the occasion is an opportunity for Taichung to become a world class city. He said such an agreement will help boost tourism in central Taiwan and eventually upgrade Taichung International Airport to a world class airport.
Deputy legislature president Tsai Chi-chang said the great progress made by Taichung airport will help the transportation ministry plan new runways and new terminals to accommodate more passengers.
Masanao Tomozoe, president of the Central Japan International Airport Company, said his side will support the new air route. He said he hopes for more regular flights between the two destinations in the future.
