Tainan couple wins NT$1.1 million on two scratch lottery tickets

Taipei- A married couple in Tainan recently won a NT$1 million (US$35,714) prize on a scratch lottery card, only to buy two more cards and win another NT$100,000, according to Taiwan Lottery Corp.

The couple, who are in their 50s, purchased three NT$300 tickets in a special scratch card game, the "NT$20 million Super Red Envelope," that was launched for the Lunar New Year holiday, the company said on Monday.

Shortly after making the purchase, the couple returned to the lottery store believing they had won NT$100,000. However, after inspecting their card, the clerk informed them that they had in fact won NT$1 million.

At that point, "they started screaming with joy and disbelief," the vendor said.

To test their luck, the couple purchased two more scratch lottery cards, and ended up winning another NT$100,000, bringing their total prize money to NT$1.1 million, according to the company.

Meanwhile, in New Taipei, five relatives in their 20s won a NT$1 million prize after pooling their money to buy Super Red Envelope scratch cards, Taiwan Lottery said.

According to the lottery vendor, the group stopped in to buy the tickets while visiting family on the second day of the Lunar New Year.

After winning, one of them joked that it was lucky they were all related, "so we don't have to worry about one of us disappearing with the winning card," the vendor said.

The "NT$20 million Super Red Envelope" scratch card game offers three NT$20 million jackpots, seven NT$2 million plus a BMW SUV prizes, and 520 NT$1 million prizes, according to Taiwan Lottery.

As of Feb. 13, 135 NT$1 million prizes and two combination prizes of NT$2 million plus a BMW SUV had been claimed, the company said.
