Bangkok is the top-ranked destination city by international overnight visitor arrivals and Taipei ranked 15, the 2016 Mastercard Global Destinations Cities Index said on Thursday.
According to the study, Bangkok is estimated to receive 21.47 million international overnight visitors in 2016, ahead of London’s 19.88 million.
The No. 3 to No. 5 most popular cities are Paris, Dubai, and New York, respectively.
Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Instanbul, Tokyo, and Seoul are ranked No. 6 to No. 10, respectively.
Cities ranked No. 11 to No. 15 respectively are Hong Kong, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Milan, and Taipei.
Meanwhile Rome, Osaka, Vienna, Shanghai, and Prague are ranked No. 16 to No. 20.
The index provides a ranking of the 132 most visited cities around the world, breaking them into five regions: Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, and North America.
Taipei is estimated to receive 7.35 million international overnight visitors in 2016, while the peak months for visiting the Taiwanese capital are March, and November and December.
In another list of top 20 fastest-growing destination cities in 2016 in the study, the fastest-growing destination city over the 2009-2016 period, is Osaka, followed by Chengdu, Abu Dhabi, Colombo, and Tokyo.
The No. 6 to No. 10 cities on the list are Riyadh, Taipei, Xi’an, Tehran, and Xiamen.
The compound annual growth rate of international overnight visitors to Osaka over the period is 24.15 percent, and those to Taipei is 14.53 percent.
