The 2017 Taipei Lantern Festival is now under way. The nine-day light festival began at 6pm on Saturday, offering visitors a feast for the eyes.
This year's theme -- "West Side Story, Taipei Glory" has less to do with the American musical, and more to do with the fact that the festival has been moved for the first time to the city's Ximending district in the western part of the city.
The main theme lantern for the Year of the Rooster, is a giant egg-shaped creature. It was lit up on Saturday night to kick off the festival.
This year marks the first time that the Taipei Lantern Festival is not confined to a single venue. Displays are spread out between the North Gate (Beimen) and Zhongshan North Road, Section 1.
The city government says it chose the area because it is home to many historical buildings, and the lanterns can help highlight the city's glorious history.
