Taipei man held in case of two year old who died of neglect

Taipei (CNA) The brother of a woman suspected of neglect in the death of her two year old son was ordered held in custody Thursday following a court hearing over his involvement in the crime, according to the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office.

Prosecutors had issued an arrest warrant for the man, surnamed Lin (?), on Jan. 14, after charging his sister and her boyfriend, surnamed Hsiao (?), with abandonment resulting in death.

According to the prosecutors’ office, on Nov. 9, 2018 the Taipei City Fire Department responded to a call regarding an apartment on Linsen North Road, where they arrived to discover the severely malnourished body of a two year old boy.

In a subsequent investigation, authorities determined that the boy was the son of the apartment’s occupant, a 22 year old single mother and hotel worker who suffers from a mild intellectual disability.

In August, 2018 a relative who had been looking after the boy told Lin to take the child back to his sister, with whom he was living at the time, according to the investigation’s findings.

Prosecutors allege that the siblings, along with the sister’s boyfriend, who moved in with them in September that year, routinely starved and beat the child, and kept him locked in the apartment’s bathroom.

The following month, both Lin and Hsiao moved out of the apartment, and began inviting the child’s mother to spend long periods of time away from home, ultimately resulting in the boy’s death from neglect.

Following their investigation, prosecutors charged both the mother and boyfriend on Jan. 14, and announced on Thursday that Lin would also be held in custody pending charges.
