Taipei, Nov. 13 (CNA) The National Palace Museum (NPM) will work toward allowing its Taipei branch to remain open while the facility undergoes a planned renovation from 2020 to 2023, NPM Director Chen Chi-nan (???) said Tuesday.
Chen made the remarks at a news conference after he suggested at a legislative hearing a day earlier that the world-famous museum was planning to close for three years starting in 2020 and move its collections to the museum's southern branch in Chiayi County.
Completely shutting down the Taipei museum would be a controversial move because it attracts nearly 5 million visitors a year -- 75 percent of whom are overseas visitors, according to Chen -- and is one of northern Taiwan's top attractions.
