The section of Zhongxiao West Road in front of Taipei Main Station will open to motorcycle traffic later this year, for the first time in over four decades, the city's Department of Transportation said Wednesday.
Transportation Commissioner Chen Shyue-tair (???) told city councilors that the decision to allow motorcycles on the road was "certain" and would begin on a trial basis by the end of the year.
The city had restricted that section of road to motorcycles because of its heavy bus traffic and lack of designated bus lanes, he said.
Zhongxiao West Road is currently one of five major thoroughfares in Taipei with sections closed to motorcycle traffic, the others being Nanjing East Road Section 6, Tiding Boulevard Section 1, Huanhe North Road and the section of Zhongshan Road crossing Dazhi Bridge towards Mingshui Road.
