Taiwan aims to train 5,000 English teachers by 2030

Taipei, The Ministry of Education is stepping up its efforts to train 5,000 elementary and junior high school English teachers by 2030 in line with a government policy to build Taiwan into a bilingual Chinese-English country by that year.

Currently, 19 universities in Taiwan plan to offer English teacher education programs, of which National Taiwan Normal University, National Changhua University of Education, National Kaohsiung Normal University, National Tsing Hua University, National Taipei University of Education and National Taichung University of Education have obtained subsidies to set up English-teaching research centers and have started research and development of teaching materials and teaching methods, the ministry said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The ministry should beef up the preparation of English teachers with the aim of giving English classes exclusively in English at elementary and junior high schools and having some courses, such as arts and mathematics, taught in English, the ministry's Department of Teacher Training and Art Education Director-General Cheng Yuan-chuan

has said earlier.

The ministry aims to train 2,000 teachers able to use English as a teaching medium by 2022 and to bring the number of teachers able to do so up to 5,000 by 2030 to meet the needs of the "bilingual country" policy promoted by former Premier Lai Ching-te according to the ministry.
