Taiwan badminton ace Chou reaches quarterfinals of China Open

Taipei-Taiwanese badminton ace Chou Tien-chen (???) defeated his Chinese opponent to advance to the quarterfinals of the men's singles at the 2019 China Open on Thursday.

It took roughly 51 minutes for Chou, the world No. 2, to oust Huang Yuxiang 21-19, 21-18 in a grueling match at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou.

In the first game, the 26-year Huang put up strong fight and succeeded in holding Chou 14-14 for a while but eventually fell behind.

The second game followed a similar pattern, with the two players tied at 14-14 before Chou again pulled away. Chou, seeded third in the tournament, had faced Huang several times before, and their four previous games had ended in a tie.

The Taiwanese will next face World No. 4 Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the quarterfinals.

Also on Thursday, Taiwanese players Lee Yang (??) and Wang Chi-lin (???) lost 11-21, 11-21 to Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe of Japan in the second round of the men's doubles.

The China Open is part of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series tournaments, and one of the three BWF World Tour Super 1000 events.

The tournament, which comes with a US$1 million purse, will run until Sunday.
