Taiwan Expo 2017 got underway on Friday in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. The deputy economics minister, Yang Wei-fuu, said the trade show demonstrates the significance of Indonesia in the government's New Southbound policy.
Taiwan Expo 2017 will take place over three days. The event's organizer, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) has brought 140 Taiwanese businesses showcasing some 3,500 Taiwanese products.
TAITRA head James Huang said at the opening of the event at the Jakarta Convention Center that he hoped the show and other events in the future would bring Taiwan and Indonesia closer together.
The New Southbound policy is a drive by the Tsai Ing-wen administration to increase Taiwan's trade and cultural ties with nations in Southeast Asia, as well as India, Australia and New Zealand.
