Taiwan grabs upset gold in 53-kg woman’s taekwondo

Taipei, Taiwanese Su Po-ya (???) won a stunning gold medal in the women's taekwondo under-53 kilogram event at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta on Monday by defeating the top ranked Asian in the category.

Su overwhelmed world No. 10 and Asian No. 1 Ha Min-ah of South Korea with a flurry of punches and kicks to the body to prevail 29-10 in the under-53 kg final, held at the Jakarta Convention Center Plenary Hall.

The 19-year-old Taiwanese is currently ranked 60th in the world, but was on the rise after finishing second in the category at the 2018 Jeju Korea Open last month, where she lost in the final to Ha 21-8.

Ha also won the women's under-53 kg category at the Asian Taekwondo Championships in May, while Su finished ninth.

Su's victory was also the third gold medal for Taiwan at the multi-sport event, which is being held until Sept. 2 in Indonesia.
