Taiwan’s under-18 tug of war team received a silver medal in the men’s 560-kilogram weight class competition after losing 0-2 to South Africa in the World Championship final in the Netherlands on Saturday.
Taiwanese teams picked up four silvers at an open club competition in Holten on Thursday, a warm-up event for this weekend’s World Championship.
The silvers were won by Taiwanese clubs in the mixed 580 kg, men’s U18 560 kg, women’s 500 kg, and U23 mixed 560 kg weight classes.
Cho Yao-peng (卓耀鵬), secretary-general of Taiwan’s Tug of War Association, said the team from South Africa came well prepared and executed their game plan expertly.
“The first round alone lasted about 10 minutes,” Cho said.
He praised his players for putting up a good fight, saying although the team walked off with an easy win over their Swiss opponents in the semifinals, they were already quite tired.
According to the association head, a Taiwanese team won gold in the women’s 540 kg in the open competition last year but only came fourth in the World Championship.
The silver received by the U18 team on Saturday was Taiwan’s first medal at the World Championship.
