Taipei: Taiwan Railway Corp. TR announced on Friday the resumption of platform ticket sales across all its stations, with a price increase from the previous NT$6 (US$0.20) to NT$22. A platform ticket allows individuals to access train platforms without boarding or traveling on any trains, providing convenience for those picking up or dropping off friends and family.
According to Focus Taiwan, sales of platform tickets were halted at over 170 stations in June 2013, except for five designated stations in Taichung and other locations. During this period, individuals could obtain a platform pass by temporarily surrendering their personal identification card to station staff, which was returned afterward.
The decision to resume platform ticket sales was influenced by growing privacy concerns, as fewer people were willing to exchange personal documents for platform access. Since June 23, platform tickets have been available for purchase at station ticket counters or through automated ticket vending machines.
The NT$22 platform ticket is valid for one hour after entry. If a ticket holder remains beyond one hour but less than three hours, an additional NT$139 fee is required, on top of the initial NT$22. For stays exceeding three hours, an extra NT$911 will be charged.
Taiwan Railway Corp. statistics reveal that platform ticket sales totaled NT$59,550 in 2023 and NT$25,362 in 2024. By the end of June this year, sales had already reached NT$57,474, surpassing the total sales for all of last year.
