Taiwan wins first two golds at Universiade

Taiwan has won its first gold at the 2017 Summer Universiade which started on Saturday.

Chen Yan-cheng won the gold medal in roller skating Monday morning. Another Taiwanese athlete Ko Fu-shiuan snatched the silver medal. They were competing in the men’s 10,000m points-elimination final.

In the afternoon, two female athletes, Yang Ho Tseng and Li Meng Tsu, also won a gold and a silver each in the same category.

So far, Taiwan has won two golds, three silvers and two bronzes. On Sunday, Taiwanese athletes won one silver and one bronze in taekwondo, and one bronze in weightlifting.

The sports administration under the Education Ministry says Taiwan has a very good chance of winning 11 golds this year.

The Summer Universiade is the most prestigious global sports competition outside of the Olympics and will be held in Taipei through August 30.
