Taipei, A Taiwanese businessman suspected of working for China has been detained on suspicion of violating the National Security Act, the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office said Thursday.
In a statement, the office said the suspect, identified only by his surname Hung (?), was summoned for questioning by prosecutors on Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to recruit an investigator at the Criminal Investigation Bureau into spying for China.
Hung, who is based out of Macau, travels frequently between Hong Kong and China.
In 2016, he allegedly offered cash and gifts to the investigator on numerous occasions to persuade him to work for China.
However, all his attempts were unsuccessful, the office said.
The suspect has been held in custody since a court acceded to a request from prosecutors that he be detained on charges of violating national security, according to the prosecutors' office.
The case is currently still under investigation.
