Taiwanese immigrant Miss Hawaii participates in Miss USA contest

Miss Hawaii Julie Kuo has become the first Taiwanese immigrant to participate in the Miss USA contest. She served as a beautiful ambassador for Taiwan during the pageant on Sunday, which saw Miss District of Columbia Kara McCullough win.

McCullough, herself an immigrant from Italy, was one of five immigrants competing in this year's competition.

Miss Hawaii Julie Kuo was born in Tainan, southern Taiwan, and went to the United States when she was ten years old. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class in high school, and she performed the violin during the pageant. The 22-year-old participant won the Miss Hawaii title last November.

Kuo has said that she hopes to bring more visibility to Taiwan through her participation in pageants. Her aspiration is to be a small restaurant owner and serve her favorite Taiwanese dishes.
