A tropical depression in the South China Sea developed into Tropical Storm Mulan Tuesday which, although not expected to affect Taiwan directly, is likely to bring torrential rainfall to central and southern parts of the county on Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, the storm was located about 930 kilometers southwest of Eluanbi, Taiwan’s southernmost tip, moving in a northwesterly direction at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour, packing sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts of up to 90 kph, the weather bureau said.
The CWB said the moist conditions created by Mulan, the seventh tropical storm in the region this year, could also cause intermittent showers in southeastern and southern Taiwan as it moves toward southern China.
Meanwhile, western Taiwan and mountainous areas in the northeast could see afternoon thunderstorms, with cloudy to sunny skies expected in other areas, according to the bureau.
On Wednesday, strong winds are also forecast in coastal areas in northern and southern Taiwan, with high waves expected in southern areas and outlying Penghu County, Green Island and Orchid Island, it said.
Drier weather is forecast islandwide from Aug. 11-16, except for western, northeastern and mountainous areas in eastern Taiwan, where sporadic thunderstorms are likely, the CWB said.
