Shares in Taiwan closed above 10,000 points on Thursday, the first time it hit the mark since the year 2000.
The weighted index of Taiwan’s stock market closed at 10,068 in April 2000. The market’s all time record was 12,682, set on February 12, 1990.
The index hit a high of 10,018 on Thursday morning. Major enterprises like the state-owned Taiwan Power Company and Formosa Petrochemical Corp were the main drivers for the strong performance.
By afternoon, the market closed on 10,001 points, with a total trade volume of NT$96.4 billion (US$3.2 billion). Analysts from the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) said an increase in foreign investment was the major reason for the surge. The FSC said that total foreign investment had reached an all-time high as of March, at US$208.7 billion.
