The National Security Bureau (NSB) says US President-elect Donald Trump is likely to continue the existing US policy on cross-strait ties.
In a written statement to the legislature, the bureau said the United States has long abided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiques it signed with China, as well as the Six Assurances that it promised Taiwan.
The bureau also said Taiwan has played an indispensable role in Washington's strategy for the Asia Pacific region. But it cautioned that should the United States withdraw from the region because of Donald Trump's call for isolationism, China might increase its influence.
The bureau urged the government to win more friends in Congress as there has been a slight decrease in the number of members of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus following the elections.
