Taichung: One person was killed and three others were injured in a multi-vehicle traffic accident in downtown Taichung on Thursday morning, which police have classified as a DUI incident. The accident involved a car crashing into four other vehicles, a scooter, and a bicycle on Zhiyu Road, according to local authorities. According to Focus Taiwan, emergency responders from the Taichung Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a report at 10:47 a.m. The initial investigation revealed that a 22-year-old man, identified by his surname Lin, was driving eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to collide with the other vehicles involved. The accident resulted in the death of a 75-year-old scooter driver, surnamed Tu, who was found without vital signs at the scene and later pronounced dead at the hospital. A 58-year-old cyclist, surnamed Sung, sustained an intracranial hematoma and underwent surgery at a second hospital. Another victim, a 46-year-old female car driver, surname d Huang, was admitted to a hospital despite having no visible injuries. Lin, who sustained knee bruises, was also taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Taichung police reported that Lin's breath alcohol level was measured at over 0.98 mg/l, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 0.15 mg/l. The case has been forwarded to prosecutors to assess whether there is sufficient evidence to charge Lin with a criminal offense.
