124,000 Taiwanese Hold Over NT$100 Million in Assets: Report Highlights Wealth Distribution

Taipei: A total of 124,000 Taiwanese, or about 0.53 percent of the population, have accumulated assets of at least NT$100 million (US$3.17 million), as highlighted in a report released by E.SUN Commercial Bank and KPMG Taiwan. The report, titled "2026 Taiwan High-Net-Worth Client Wealth Management and Inheritance Survey Report," reveals the extent of wealth held by these individuals, totaling NT$46.1 trillion.

According to Focus Taiwan, the report categorizes high-net-worth wealth management clients into four groups: those with assets ranging from NT$100 million to NT$500 million, NT$500 million to NT$1 billion, NT$1 billion to NT$3 billion, and those with over NT$3 billion. The segment of around 5,000 clients, with assets of at least NT$1 billion, experienced the fastest growth in 2025, amassing a combined NT$18.7 trillion.

At the top tier, approximately 1,200 individuals with assets exceeding NT$3 billion saw their wealth triple between 2023 and 2025, reaching NT$12.1 trillion. E.SUN Bank Chairman Joseph N.C. Huang noted in a press release that the distribution of wealth among 0.53 percent of Taiwanese exemplified the spread of wealth "among the people."

Huang identified three main categories of high-net-worth individuals in Taiwan: entrepreneurs, tech company founders, and those who have gained wealth through real estate. Sean Chen, deputy head of financial services at KPMG Taiwan, observed a trend of these individuals moving more assets offshore for tax planning, risk diversification, and broader investment opportunities.

Respondents with a net worth exceeding NT$3 billion reportedly held an average of 48 percent of their assets overseas. The report's figures are based on simulated projections from a survey conducted by KPMG in September and October 2025, which included 491 questionnaires and 28 in-depth interviews with high-net-worth clients, such as company executives, senior managers, professionals, and retirees.
