3 Taiwanese Films Nominated for Berlin International Film Festival

Berlin: Three Taiwanese movies have been shortlisted for this year's Berlin International Film Festival, which takes place from Feb. 13 to Feb. 23.

According to Focus Taiwan, the drama "Eel" by director Chu Chun-teng has been nominated for the Perspectives section, the drama "Silent Sparks" by director Chu Ping is nominated for the Panorama section, and the satire "The Trio Hall" by artist Su Hui-yu is in the running for the Forum section.

Tricia Tuttle, director of the festival, said at a press event on Tuesday to announce the shortlisted films that 14 feature-length films had made the Perspectives section dedicated to debut films. Notably, she said, five of the productions were directed by women directors and two of them by nonbinary directors.

The new category brings together filmmakers with audacious ideas from around the world and is eclectic both in terms of styles and themes, Tuttle said. The 2025 edition of Berlinale is set to be the first under the leadership of Tuttle, an American, who became the festival's director in April 2024. Previously she was with the British Film Institute overseeing the BFI London Film Festival.
