Five Vietnamese migrant workers have been arrested for allegedly conducting unauthorized plastic surgery in Taichung, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) said Friday.
The key suspect, a 27-year-old factory worker surnamed Tạ, was found to conduct medical practices using needles of unknown origins, based solely on what he learned from YouTube videos, according to the NIA’s Central Taiwan Administration Corps.
Tạ, his girlfriend and three assistants — who are all legal migrant workers — had been giving injections and performing surgery on their clients such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, and suction-assisted lipectomy, the corps said in a statement.
They had been doing so for more than a year, earning around NT$100,000 (US$3,192) per month by charging their clients NT$300-NT$3,000 per millimeter of injection, the corps said.
Acting on a tip-off, the corps recently raided the group’s salon near ASEAN Square, catching Tạ in the middle of performing surgery and confiscating medical materials such as needles, botox, and hyaluronic acid doses.
After its probe, the crops charged the migrant workers with violating the Physicians Act and brought them to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office for further questioning.
