58th Golden Horse Awards ceremony to take place Saturday

Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA) The 58th Golden Horse Awards ceremony will take place at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei on Saturday, with Singaporean funnyman Mark Lee and Chinese-American actress Bai Ling presenting awards.

The veteran Singaporean comedian known for his witty jokes and colorful antics was nominated best leading actor for the comedy drama “Number 1” at the awards last year, while Bai was also nominated last year as best leading actress for the drama “The Abortionist.”

They were invited back this year to present awards because of their popularity in the Chinese-language film industry.

At a press conference Thursday, Lee expressed his excitement to be in Taiwan and will stay in the country until Nov. 31 before he leaves to work on a film project.

Lee said he hopes there will be more opportunities to work with Taiwanese production companies.

Meanwhile, Bai said she really likes Taiwan for its diverse eastern and western cultural influences and its people.

“I really like Taiwan, maybe I will move here one day, I’m not kidding,” said Bai, who is staying in Taiwan until Dec. 1.

She will leave to finish a movie in which she is for the first time, director, actor and scriptwriter, Bai said.

According to the committee, a total of 573 entries were submitted to the Golden Horse Awards, up from last year’s 465, with a new category — best documentary short film — added this year.

Hong Kong film “Drifting,” based on a real-life incident that involved homeless people in Hong Kong, received the most nominations — 12 — at the Golden Horse Awards this year.

Meanwhile, three other films “The Soul,” “The Falls” and “Till We Meet Again,” all made in Taiwan, received 11 nominations each.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on Taiwan Television Enterprise in Taiwan, StarHub in Singapore, Astro in Malaysia and Brunei, KTSF 26 in San Francisco, and CTI in North America.
