Adoption of 16 ragdoll, British shorthair cats attracts 566 applicants

A total of 566 aspiring cat owners arrived at Hsinchu County's public animal shelter on Tuesday to take part in a lucky draw to adopt one of 16 ragdoll and British shorthair cats, rescued three months earlier from an illegal breeding ground and pet seller.

All 12 ragdolls and four British shorthairs went to new owners after the lucky draw, which allowed each applicant to choose their five preferred cats, said Hsinchu County Magistrate Yang Wen-ke (???).

According to the shelter, rescuers found 22 cats in April in Zhudong Township, which were either being bred illegally or abandoned on the street.

Many of the cats had feline distemper when found, but have since recovered and received vaccinations, the shelter said, adding that there will be a second adoption campaign for the remaining cats.
