Ambassador Theaters cinema at Breeze Center to close after 20 years

Although the recent surge in domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases that started in mid-May has been brought under control, Ambassador Theaters announced Tuesday that its Breeze Center cinema in Taipei will close in late October after screening thousands of major Hollywood movies over two decades.

On its Facebook page, Ambassador Theaters, one of the largest cinema chain operators in Taiwan, said Oct. 25 will be the last day the Breeze Center cinema in downtown Taipei shows movies, as that is when its lease with the shopping mall expires.

"We sincerely appreciate the support and recognition from audiences in Taipei over the past 20 years," the cinema chain operator said. "We look forward to seeing you again in the future."

Ambassador Theaters at Breeze Center, a popular shopping mall on Taipei's Fuxing South Road, opened when the shopping mall started operations in 2001.

The closure of the cinema follows the earlier closing of an Ambassador cinema at GlobalMall in Zhonghe District, New Taipei, at the end of 2020.

The Breeze Center said seven to eight potential tenants including theater operators and international luxury brands have expressed an interest in leasing the space.

The shopping mall said it is carefully evaluating how to introduce new brands to broaden the services it provides.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Theaters said another cinema in the Southern District of Taichung, which opened in August 2020, will close temporarily from Oct. 25, citing the impact of COVID-19.

The cinema chain owner said it will resume operations at the Taichung venue when the pandemic ends.

Ambassador Theaters said the rights of members at the two cinemas being closed will be protected and consumers will be allowed to use any tickets they bought at discount rates at any other outlet around Taiwan.

On its website, Ambassador Theaters indicated it also owns two other cinemas in Taipei, three in New Taipei, one in Taoyuan, one in Tainan, two in Kaohsiung, one in Pingtung and one on the outlying island of Kinmen.
