Civil Servants, Military Personnel, and Teachers to Receive 3% Pay Raise Starting in May: Premier

Taipei: Civil servants, military personnel, and public school teachers are set to receive a 3 percent pay raise starting in May, as announced by Premier Cho Jung-tai during a legislative hearing.

According to Focus Taiwan, Premier Cho provided the timeline for the pay increase in response to questions from lawmakers regarding the implementation of the raise. The central government budget, which was upheld by lawmakers and promulgated by President Lai Ching-te on March 21, paved the way for this decision. The premier explained that the delay in implementing the pay raise was due to the Cabinet's reluctance to allocate the funds before addressing its concerns over the NT$3.1 trillion central government budget plan. The budget, initially approved by the Legislature on January 21, faced opposition from the Cabinet due to numerous cuts and freezes.

The Cabinet's attempt to reconsider the budget was met with resistance, as the Legislature voted on March 12 to uphold its original budget plan. Despite these challenges, Premier Cho confirmed on Tuesday morning that the decision was made to begin issuing the 3 percent salary raise for civil servants in May. However, further details regarding the implementation were not disclosed. It is noted that the wage increase for public servants had been previously approved by the Executive Yuan in July 2024.
