Cold front to bring temperatures down in Taiwan from Sunday night: CWB

The arrival of a cold air mass late Sunday is expected to send temperatures into the teens across much of Taiwan, while bringing steady rain to the north and occasional showers to other regions, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB forecast daytime high temperatures on Sunday of 20-24 degrees Celsius in northern and eastern Taiwan, 26-27 degrees in Taitung and from Miaoli down to Kaohsiung in the west, and up to 30 degrees in Pingtung County in the south.

From Sunday night, however, a southward moving front will bring colder weather to northern, central and eastern parts of the country, along with steady rain in the north and occasional or scattered showers in the central, eastern and southern regions, the weather bureau said.

Daytime temperatures on Monday are expected to range from 14-18 degrees in Taipei, 14-20 degrees in Taichung, 17-26 degrees in Kaohsiung and 19-22 degrees in Hualien, with nighttime lows in those cities to range between 12 and 14 degrees, CWB data shows.

Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said the cold front was expected to peak between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

During that period, low-lying areas could see the mercury dip to as low as 10 degrees, while temperatures in Taipei could drop to 13 degrees, with snow possible at elevations of above 3,500 meters, he said.

As the system eases, much of Taiwan will see cool, dry weather between Tuesday and Thursday, during which time the mercury will rebound, but with significant day-night temperature differentials, Wu said.

Another cold air mass, relatively weak in intensity, is forecast to arrive in Taiwan on March 14, he added.
